2020: The Need That Gave Birth to the Idea of IXTAbox
The story of IXTAbox began at the end of 2020 when the Rietz family bought a Tesla Model X. Faced with the challenge of transporting the entire family including a dog, equipment and skis for a Christmas holiday in northern Sweden, Carl Rietz, an entrepreneur and engineer, realized that a different solution than a roof box was required. He came up with a practical solution using the car's towbar.
Carl designed and assembled the first IXTAbox in the family garage: a 190x45x60 cm aluminum box with a capacity of 550 liters. While the thick 2-3 mm aluminum shell made the prototype somewhat heavy, it laid the foundation for a high-quality, durable rear box – designed to withstand tough adventures.
Carl's philosophy was simple, yet ambitious: to create a product that combined functionality with thoughtful design, ensuring the highest quality and usability.

2021: From Garage to Growing Demand
The word about the IXTAbox quickly spread among family friends, sparking interest in owning their own IXTAbox. Encouraged by this, Carl and his family embarked on an exciting journey to improve and refine their creation.
- First Website: A simple website was launched, marking IXTAbox’s first step into the market.
- Expanded Product Line: Several sizes of IXTAbox were introduced. The maximum height was soon standardized at 50 cm to prevent overloading and optimize safety.
While demand steadily grew, each IXTAbox was still assembled in the family garage – a workspace filled with innovation but never a parked car.

2022: Aerodynamics and Collaboration
2022 was a pivotal year for IXTAbox as significant progress was made to improve functionality and design.
- Adjustable Towing Hook Fixture: A height-adjustable mechanism was introduced, ensuring that an IXTAbox can be mounted so that the boot lid can be opened on most cars. This offers greater flexibility and ease of use for customers regardless of the car they have today or tomorrow.
- Colour Options: From black, white, to raw aluminium finishes.
- Corporate Partnerships: Hertz adopted the IXTAbox into its rental fleet – a recognition of its practical appeal.
- Master Thesis Insights: Marcus Sandberg from Chalmers University of Technology conducted an extensive study comparing the aerodynamic performance of roof boxes relative to backboxes. His results demonstrated the superior aerodynamic efficiency of the IXTAbox, further validating its design.

2023: Setting a New Standard for Backboxes
Guided by customer feedback, supplier insights and aerodynamic research, a complete overhaul of the IXTAbox design was carried out in 2023.
- Stainless-Steel Framework: A new load-bearing structure was introduced, making the box both stronger and lighter.
- Aerodynamic Wings: Innovative wings were added to minimize turbulence in the airflow between the car and the box.
- Integrated LED Lights: Improved visibility and comfort for users.
- New Finish Standard: A durable light gray powder coating became the standard finish.
The move from the family garage to a dedicated assembly facility in Herrljunga marked a major milestone. With a couple of hundred square meters of space dedicated to production, IXTAbox solidified its position as a committed player in the roof box market.

2024: Refined Design for Greater Performance
Further progress was made on the IXTAbox product, confirming our commitment to innovation and user-centric design.
- Streamlined Shape: To improve aerodynamic properties and create a slimmer profile, the lower front part of the IXTAbox was tilted. This adjustment not only improved performance but also gave the box a more elegant appearance.
- Internal LED Lights: Added for improved visibility and usability.
- Increased Depth: The depth of the box was increased from 50 cm to 55 cm, increasing capacity while maintaining an elegant design.
- Expanded Product Line: Five models were offered, from 175 cm to 210 cm wide, with heights of 38 and 45 cm.
Sales were mainly to customers in Sweden but also to international customers who discovered IXTAbox online. This reflects our gradually growing presence and lasting appeal.
